Tucson Dave’s Taco Trail 2009 Review August 10th, 2009

El Guero Canelo 2480 N Oracle, Tucson, AZ  520-822-8977 www.elguerocanelo.com.

It’s still hotter than hot in the Old Pueblo.  It’s August.  If you are smart and rich, you are on your boat in San Diego.  If your stuck here working, well, you got to have some fun.  We’ve lost our monsoon rain and it is driving us crazy.  Just the sort of reason to go hit the Trail for tacos.  El Guero Canelo’s, like BK’s Carne Asada which was highlighted in a previous entry, is another familiar joint for me.  I started visiting both of these stands while working on Tucson’s south side.  Both El Guero Canelo and Bk’s started across the street from one another on S. 12th for many years before opening a north side location.  El Guero Canelo has a pretty diverse menu and does a big breakfast crowd.  The salsa bar kicks you know what and has many different condiments plus grilled jalapenos and Mexican green onions.  The place is huge and draws a crowd at all times of the day.  I met my pal Alex there for lunch.  Alex is helping me join the high tech communication game with blogging.  He is responsible for all of the food shots here while we had lunch at El Guero Canelos.  One down side to the taco scene here is that you can get only two types of tacos.  Chicken or carne asada.  I ordered both along with a chicken caramelo which is chunks of chicken with queso blanco between two grilled flour tortillas.  After two trips to the salsa bar I was ready for ten more of those darn tacos.  They have a creamy avocado base sauce that is almost like a cold soup and goes great with just about everything.  The tacos were good with the carne asada being mesquite grilled and the chunks of chicken were spiced up and tasty.  The flour tortillas are excellent and so are the corn variety.  I had both.  I have to say that I like BK’s better.  BK’s serves beer.  When it is hot out, that matters. BK’s carne asada just tastes better. The salsa bar here gets the nod over BK’s.  Three tacos and a Mexican soda were $7.00.  El Guero Canelo is equally famous for their Sonoran Hot Dog.  In fact, they were recently written up in Bon Appétit magazine.  Heck, I hope that does not start a dress code to eat there.  I bet there will be fancier cars in the parking lot.

My pal Alex had the Burrito.  They are large and cheap.  El Guero Canelo takes third place on the Taco Trail of 2009 behind still in first place, Maicos and Bk’s.

Me and My Condiment Plate, Chicken and Carne Asada Tacos, Yum!
