Mearns Quail Hunting December 2009
This past season was absolutely the worst I have experienced as Arizona suffered from a terrible drought. Mearns quail need monsoon rain (July and August) and we just did not get that much in the summer of 2009. But, we adjust and the dogs are still eager to get out and run. During the past couple of seasons, I have tried to get my pal and expert photographer, Alex Landeen to spend a walk with us and take photos. While we did not get many points that cool December day, the dogs had fun and we got some great exercise. Thanks to Alex for some cool photos and I really appreciated his effort in taking them. These are all around the Huachuca mountain range. The older dog is now retired and that was her last hunt. The young dog, Teeka, is now the star player.

Chile Adventure 2008
The following pictures are from my trip to the Patagonia region of Chile in January and February 2008. We left at the end of January and returned in early February. The trip was to Rio Azul Lodge (www.rioazullodge.com ). We flew from Puerto Montt to Chaiten and drove four hours into the Andes near the border with Argentina. And near the village of Futaleufu. This valley might be the most beautiful place I have ever been in the world and the people there were some of the friendliest.
Sadly, the Chaiten Volcano erupted May 2, 2008 approximately 6 km from the town of Chaiten and Chaiten was evacuated by the Chilean Navy. After a series of violent eruptions of ash that immediately poisoned the water supply, the volcano erupted with pyroclastic lava flows that still threaten the town of Chaiten as of May 19, 2008. The largest of the plumes of ash went directly east up the Rio Yelcho drainage and into Rio Azul and into the village of Futaleufu which was about 15 minute drive from the Rio Azul Lodge. The entire community of Futaleufu was evacuated and the animals remain. The entire river system that drains this part of Chile towards the Pacific Ocean and Chaiten has been impacted with large flooding of volcanic ash laden rivers. One can only imagine what has happened to the fishing. Due to ash flows and rain the rivers have flooded and 90% of Chaiten is under water. Our hearts and prayers go out to those people that have been impacted. Below is the original article that I drafted prior to the posting of my pictures and before the eruption May 2.
This relatively undiscovered and unfished area produced some of the most scenic trout fishing anywhere in the world. Both Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout were the most sought after species with some possible sea run variety of Browns. If you are interested in this trip, call my friend Doug Buck at 520-887-2398. Doug runs a small adventure fishing company that produces some very memorable fishing experiences. His attention to detail and perfect locations make for a great trip.

Fly fishing for Tarpon near the border of
Costa Rica and Panama. Several hundred pound plus fish
were taken on the fly during the week. This fish was just under 100 pounds
and fought for about 55 minutes. This water is the Caribbean side of Costa
Rica. The rod is an 11wt Sage with a Billy Pate reel.
